Instructions for Loading Voyager Browser and Viewing 3D
Sites
The Browser
To view VRML models you need a VRML browser. VRML browsers
help your Web server interpret the VRML language. There are
a variety of VRML browsers you can download through your Web
server. WeÆve included Voyager browser on this issue's
Bright Ideas« CD.
Configure the Browser
To view a VRML world you must first open Netscape or other
HTML browser. Configuring your browser allows it to launch
the VRML browser when it encounters a VRML file. If you
don't have an HTML Internet browser, you are still able to
walk-through and view CD-ROM sites using the VRML Voyager
browser (included on this CD). The only difference is you
won't be able to click on hot spots and jump into new 2D or
3D worlds.
Windows 95 users must install the Voyager browser. You will find the Voyager browser setup.exe in the reviews/Voyager folder.
Configure the HTML browser
1. Launch the HTML browser by double-clicking its icon.
2. Select Options/General Preferences... Press the helper tab.
3. Press the New Type... button.
For the MIME Type text field, enter: x world
In the MIME subtype text field, enter: x vrml
NOTE FOR MAC USERS: In Netscape 3.0 for Mac, this same button will read, "NEW". In the Mime type text field, enter: x world. In the Sufixes text field, enter: x vrml. The Discriptions text field can be left blank.
4. Click OK
7. In the Extensions text field, enter: wrl, vpy, vvr, wtp,
wlk, vmd, wsb.
8. In the Action area, Select the Launch Application button
and click the Browse... button. Select Virtus Voager as the helper applicaton for those fyle types.
9. (Macintosh Only) Choose the ApplicationÆs Default File
Type from the file type pop-up menu.
10. Click OK.
Instructions for Loading a 3D File
Make sure Netscape browser or similar HTML browser is open.
Mouse down on File/Open File in Browser. Scroll down the
Files of Type dialog box to choose VRML worlds (.wrl). In
the area labeled Look in, scroll down and find your CD ROM
drive with the Bright Ideas« CD inserted. Locate the VRML
folder for the Bideas file. Select this file to launch the
VRML Voyager browser.
Browsing and Linking to New 3D Worlds
Walk around the room using the arrow keys along the bottom
of the browser. If you get lost press the home button to
return to the default view. It may take a little practice to
get the hang of navigation, but it does get easier. Set
Phong Shading in the View menu. This is more processor
intensive, but gives beautiful results. Browse around
outside. Navigate through the gallery. On the right hand
wall with the collage of fonts is a blue circle. Get very
close to it and Alt + Click (Windows) or Command + Click
(Mac). The URL will appear in the long window at the bottom
of the Voyager browser screen and reads fonts.wrl.
An hourglass appears as the linked file loads. The rectangle
next to the URL window fills with gray when the new world is
completely loaded. Click on the Go Button and you're on your
way to our fonts 3D site. Browse around the outside and
inside. The hot spot is located on a large cube with clip
art images upon it. This is located in the back right corner
of the room. Notice the small square patch on the bottom of
the cube. Alt + Click (Windows) or Command + Click (Mac) and
the URL message reappears in the window. It will read
Bideas.wrl. . This splashes you back to the previous world
